Can you be in so much pain you can't feel it?

i am a sickle cell anemia patient and i have been experiencing intense pain in my torso and head and one of my friends with the same condition has said he has felt so much pain he stopped feeling it and only felt a freezing sensation in the area he is hurting from is this possible? because this has happened to me 3 times already and if so is this good or bad?
