Suicide was not considered illegal or immoral until the insurance companies complained to the United States government. After hearing the complaint, the Congress decided to make suicide illegal as a way to deny death benefit claims from families where a member committed suicide. In most cultures ritual suicide was considered honorable. Even the British had their version among the military and nobles where someone would thoughtfully load and place a revolver on their desk while they were out hoping that they would do the honorable thing by using it on themselves.
